Green Shoots - Spring 2014 - May refresh

As spring is definitely sprung, we thought we'd come out of hybernation for a while.

Appeal of Bells

Music in rural churches was once a community affair with villagers joining and playing their own instruments.

Sussex Harmony, a popular Lewes based group, will perform in costume their programme “And every voice a song”.  This will cover the music that would have been heard during a Sussex year from Wassail through to harvest and Christmas with some readings from the period pre-1850. The recital is on 22nd June at St Mary's Church, and there will be a retiring collection in aid of the Warbleton Church Bell Restoration Appeal. For more details CLICK HERE

Hear and Now

A mobile information and advice service - for Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people - is coming to Rushlake Green on May 22nd. East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre is a registered charity working in partnership with Adult Social Care to provide a no charge mobile information and advice service for Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people living in East Sussex.  The information bus, which is funded by the Big Lottery and is equipped to offer demonstrations of assistive equipment and hearing screening tests (if time permits), will be outside Osborne House on Thursday 22nd May 2014 from 1.30pm – 3.30pm. Getting our Streets Ahead

We follow local efforts, in the face of continually changing consumer trends, to regenerate local town centres and high streets.

The Heathfield Partnership has, for more than ten years, been successfully working to improve the high street and attract shoppers back into the town centre. Hailsham, although still blighted with many empty shops, is now also working hard on the issue and the Hailsham Forward project has come up with initiatives that include the new weekly Street Market in vicarage fields, a major plan for road and parking improvements, and ideas to stimulate the town's night life. Uckfield is also now well advanced with plans for a major improvement of the town centre. And other towns and villlages across the District are forming community teams and partnerships to tackle the issue.

In this context, Wealden District Council has created the 'Streets Ahead' project to strengthen the local authority's support for, and promotion of, these efforts by town and village communities.

This month we publish the first four articles in what we hope will be a continuing series on this all-important topic.
