A group of local residents is getting together to protect the Horse and Groom, which is now up for sale. The group aims to ask for the support and necessary action of the Parish Council and Wealden D.C. to safeguard the pub (already registered as a Community Asset) as a valuable local social hub, especially in the light of the recent closure of other well used pubs in the Parish. At the Parish Meeting (originally set for Thursday 15th April but now deferred), the group will be seeking the Parish Council’s support in making an application to Wealden DC to trigger a moratorium period, during which the group will be able to set up a Community Interest Company (CIC) to purchase the property on behalf of the community. As you will know, despite many objections from locals the Black Duck was recently granted planing permission for conversion to a residential home. So even a pub that has previously been highly successful is not safe from the risk of ‘conversion’.

Clearly this has been a ghastly period for anyone trying to run a pub, and it will probably be many months if not years before pubs can return to where they were pre-covid. But the Horse and Groom is absolutely pivotal to local life in and around Rushlake Green and, with local support and a pub team dedicating itself to being attractive, hospitable and welcoming to both local customers and those from further afield, this is a chance to secure the pub’s place at the heart of the community.

Anyone wishing to register an interest in supporting the planned Community Interest Company to protect the Horse & Groom can email us at:
rushlakegreenvillage@gmail.com and we’ll pass your details on to the group that’s being formed to create the CIC.
